Rambus Sees Growth Across Licensing Businesses

Royalty revenues totaled $76.96 million, up 18.2% from $65.12 million in the year-ago quarter. The company's intellectual property licensing business remained an important contributor to revenues, complementing its expanding semiconductor product portfolio.

Contract and other revenues increased 34.7% year over year to $27.02 million from $20.05 million. The growth across all three revenue categories underscores Rambus' diversified business model, combining chip sales with technology licensing and engineering-related activities.

RMBS Profitability Improves Despite Higher Costs

RMBS’ gross profit increased to $170.91 million from $141.92 million a year earlier. However, gross margin contracted slightly to 78.3% from 79.5%, reflecting a higher cost of revenues alongside expanding product sales.

RMBS’ operating expenses increased 10.9% year over year to $87.26 million. Research and development expenses were relatively stable at $49.36 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses rose 29.3% to $37.68 million.

Despite higher expenses, RMBS’ operating income climbed 32.2% to $83.65 million. Operating margin expanded to 38.3% from 35.4%. Rambus’ non-GAAP operating income reached $102.2 million compared with $79.2 million a year earlier, demonstrating improved operating leverage as revenues expanded.

Rambus Generates Record Operating Cash Flow

Cash provided by operating activities reached a record $102.5 million, up 16% from $88.4 million in the year-ago quarter. The improvement highlighted the company's ability to translate operating performance into cash generation.

Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $776.9 million at the end of September compared with $824.9 million at the end of June. The decline primarily reflected $135.4 million in common stock repurchases and $11.2 million in capital expenditures, partly offset by operating cash inflows.

Rambus returned approximately $135 million to shareholders during the quarter, including a $100 million accelerated share repurchase. The company also maintained a debt-free balance sheet, providing financial flexibility to support product development and long-term growth initiatives.

RMBS Expands Its Advanced Memory and Security Portfolio

Rambus continued expanding its product and silicon IP portfolio to address next-generation AI infrastructure requirements. During the quarter, the company highlighted an industry-leading power management integrated circuit, or PMIC, designed for LPDDR6 SOCAMM2 memory solutions.

The company also introduced data center-class Root of Trust security IP, extending its capabilities in protecting advanced computing infrastructure. These additions complement Rambus' existing memory interface and semiconductor IP offerings, positioning the company to address increasing performance, power efficiency and security requirements.

Management emphasized that expanding AI workloads are creating demand for greater memory bandwidth and more sophisticated computing architectures. Continued investment in differentiated semiconductor technologies remains central to Rambus' long-term growth strategy.

Rambus Projects Stronger Q4 Performance

For the fourth quarter of 2026, Rambus expects revenues between $227 million and $233 million, indicating sequential growth from the third quarter. Product revenues are projected between $127 million and $133 million, while royalty revenues are expected between $68 million and $74 million.

Contract and other revenues are projected to be between $26 million and $32 million. Management expects non-GAAP earnings per share to be between 84 cents and 92 cents compared with the third quarter's 84 cents.

The outlook assumes non-GAAP operating costs and expenses between $120 million and $124 million, a 16% non-GAAP tax rate and approximately 109 million diluted shares. Management expects continued demand for its differentiated semiconductor solutions to support stronger fourth-quarter performance.
